The Art on the Bricks Art Walk typically highlights artists and musicians in existing businesses. The April 11th event is adding a slight twist to the monthly art walk scheduled for Thursday, April 11. In addition to 22 retail stores, offices and restaurants hosting pop-up galleries for 55 artists and musicians, three locations are showcasing not only the artists but also the opportunity for a business owner or entrepreneur to lease the space in any of three historic buildings.
Karen Wagaman, VP for Downtown Development with Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, reached out to property owners and leasing agents and connected them with artists to showcase both art and the commercial property listings. “Downtown Rogers is the ideal location for business owners and entrepreneurs to grow their business,” commented Wagaman. “Businesses thrive in a district that offers affordable lease rates, a diverse mix of restaurants, retail and offices. Downtown Rogers has all of that plus a friendly community that is dog friendly and packed with experiential opportunities like a farmers market, cooking classes, wine and beer tastings, axe throwing, trivia nights, and the monthly art walk--all within walking distance of each other,” she continued.
The properties being featured as part of the art walk are works of art in themselves. All three are in the Rogers Historic Commercial District and available for tours Thursday, April 11, 4:30 – 7:30 p.m., during the Art Walk.
Property 1: 103 W. Walnut Street has available retail on the ground floor and one of the two apartments above is also for lease. In 1896 this property was a farm implement store, followed by a jeweler, grocer and candy and ice cream company. By the 1950s a tire and supply store occupied the space with law offices on the 2nd floor. In the early 1970s it was an art studio--so featuring the dynamic, pop-art portraits by artist and retired attorney, Jim Johnson, seems only fitting. Property 2: 114 S. 1st Street dates back to 1907 and was the Bank of Rogers, designed by the area’s leading architect, A.O. Clark. The red granite columns and limestone façade support the beautiful Romanesque arch. The floors are mosaic tile and the doors and trim are mahogany. The building continued to serve as a bank, though with different names, into the mid-1950s. over the next several decades it was home to a variety of offices, and even home to a television station in the late 1980s until the mid-1990s. The featured artists are: R.J. Lawlor, Acrylic & Mixed Media, who works in large form 2D work on canvas. The second artist at 114 S 1st Street is Kinya Christian, a visual artist who works in all mediums. Kinya creates colorful abstract works on a variety of surfaces. Property 3: 121 S 2nd Street has a distinctive art deco style with signature glass blocks supporting the large windows. The retail space on the ground floor and one of the 4 apartments on the 2nd and 3rd floors are available. The property has been home to a variety of restaurants, doctors, dentists and attorneys. Through the years the space also served as a corner barber shop as well as clothing and other retail shops. The featured artist is James Turner. James is an IT security engineer as his day job, and during his free time he can be found creating paintings with a variety of media on canvas. He enjoys using metallic paint that reflects the light differently based on the viewers prospective. “I want the viewer to love the colors and composition, but also have a sense that the painting is alive or interactive,” commented the artist.
